La endometriosis, mi hija y yo
Como equipo de Madre/Hija, estamos promoviendo el conocimiento y disponibilidad del
LETROZOLE como un tratamiento para la Endometriosis.  Esta enfermedad ha hecho
que nuestro mundo este de cabeza, ya que casi ha destruido nuestra habilidad de vivir.  
La conservadora cifra de que 90 millones de mujeres en el mundo sufran de
Endometriosis, hace que esta enfermedad sea mas común que el SIDA o el Cáncer.  A la
edad de 30, leí sobre esta enfermedad en una revista de femenina.  Busque Información
en la biblioteca local y encontré ciertas claves para el diagnostico.  Yo fui mal
diagnosticada por más de 12 años por los médicos.  En este punto de mi vida, tengo
endometriosis severa.  En toda mi vida he tenido 7 cirugías mayores.  En el año 1989, la
cirugía más terrible me causo daños extensivos permanentes, recibí de manos del Dr.
Mercer Lee, Obstetra/Ginecólogo, en Jacson, MS. Al Dr. Mercer Lee se le ha entregado
documentación en la cual, se indica un día después de la cirugía, el terrible error que se
cometió en su operación.  El Dr. Lee decidió ignorar estas pruebas, dejándome sufrir y
permaneciendo enferma por 9 anios hasta que tuve una nueva cirugía en 1998.  Debido a
la negligente actitud del Dr. Lee en 1989, dejo mi trompa de Falopio izquierda cubierta de
endometriosis por 9 años hasta que me hicieron una histerectomía completa, una masa de
adhesiones se encontraba en la trompa y se lleno de bacterias.  Ahora tengo dolor todos
los días de mi vida.

En el año 2001 podría haber muerto si el maravilloso Cirujano General, Dr. J. Clay
Wellborn, (Little Rock, AR) no me hubiese practicado una cirugía de emergencia.  
Durante esta cirugía fue necesario eliminar gran parte del colon, de hecho soy muy
afortunada de no necesitar una bolsa.  He pasado momentos muy duros con esta
enfermedad, y he tratado de ir hacia adelante de manera de olvidar el horrible dolor que
he tenido durante mi vida adulta.  Pero esto no fue todo, Dios tenía un camino para Kari
y para mí.  Kari, a la edad de 16, se convirtió en la mujer mas joven con un grado muy
severo de endometriosis que iría a tratamiento en Febrero de 2004, después de la
culminación del estudio del Dr. Serdar E. Bulun.

Kari ha tenido 7 cirugías, la primera el 19 de Noviembre de 2003, por un
Obstetra/Ginecólogo la cual no fue exitosa y que la llevo a un Endocrinólogo especialista
en reproducción, el Dr. Michael M. Miller, en Little Rock, quien realicé una laparoscopia el
23 de diciembre de 2003.  Esta cirugía le dio un alivio a Kari, pero se revertiría para
finales de enero.  La enfermedad del demonio, estaba creciendo en su espalda, útero,
ovarios, en su cadera derecha, debajo de las costillas y en los hombros.  Kari no era capaz
de caminar, sentarse, o hacer su vida necesitando dejar la escuela para comenzar a
estudiar en nuestro hogar.  Ella dejo de hacer sus actividades, como por ejemplo el equipo
de natación.  Kari perdió el contacto con sus amigos.  La depresión comenzó y la sonrisa
se había ido.  Yo me había tenido que enfrentar diferentes tragedias pero este era el
tiempo más oscuro de mi vida.  Esta era mi niña y yo hubiese dado mi vida para que
ella no tuviese que pasar por esta terrible enfermedad.  Llegue a un punto de
desesperación que no sabia donde pedir ayuda y me sentí sin esperanzas.  Pero comencé
a entender que mi conocimiento y experiencia personal con le endometriosis me harían la
única persona que podría hacer lo mejor para mi hija.  Con esta determinación, pude
seguir adelante.  En junio de 2004, Kari me dijo “Mama, la endometriosis se ha ido…”
ella finalmente alcanzo el punto donde no vivía con dolor severo y los efectos secundarios
del tratamiento se habían ido.  Pero algunos problemas si la afectarían, como las
nauseas que duraron casi 1 mes, los dolores de cabeza y de ligamentos.  El cansancio
que Kari experimentaba se quedaría con ella durante todo el tratamiento.  

Kari permaneció en este tratamiento durante 13 meses debido a la severidad.  El 14 de
septiembre de 2004, Kari tuvo una cirugía de emergencia con el Dr. Miller.  Pensamos
que era por un quiste, pero tenia adhesiones que unían su útero con los intestinos.  El Dr.
Miller removió estas adhesiones y elimino otras que estaban por formarse.  Durante esta
cirugía, se descubrió que solo había 3 pedazos pequeños de endometriosis.  El Dr. Miller
elimino estos dejando a Kari libre de la enfermedad.

Tenemos las fotos del antes y el después para demostrar el maravilloso poder curativo del
Letrozole.  La mayoría de las mujeres responden bien con solo 6 meses en
LETROZOLE.  El tratamiento es una combinación de Inhibidores de Aromatase y de
acetate norethindone progestina.  Ciltrato de calcio y vitamina D, son necesarias para
prevenir perdida de densidad ósea.  El letrozole bloquea la producción de estrógeno en el
tejido graso de los órganos de donde la endometriosis se alimenta.  La endometriosis
puede ser encontrada en el cerebro, pulmones, intestinos, brazos, piernas, columna
vertebral y en cualquier órgano del cuerpo.  Kari tuvo mucho éxito con el tratamiento de
letrozole y esto puede ser una puerta abierta llena de esperanza para millones de chicas
jóvenes y mujeres.   Como cualquier otro tratamiento, no hay ninguna garantía de que
deba ser aplicado en todas las mujeres.  El letrozole, le da esperanzas a quienes decidan
utilizar este tratamiento para combatir la endometriosis.  Mi deseo es que todas las
mujeres que sufran de endometriosis, tengan conocimiento de los diferentes tratamientos
disponibles.  

Hemos tenido 2 TV locales que han hecho reportajes sobre nuestra historia, un
documental nacional de TV ha sido filmado con la secuencia final en Chicago en mayo
de 2005, donde nosotros conocimos al Dr. Bulun.  La revista Glamour ha escrito un
articulo en su edición de Marzo de 2005, sobre la endometriosis, dando reconociendo al
Dr. Bulun y a al inhibidor de aromatase como promesa de tratamiento.  Tengo también
en placer de ser la Editora de Ginecología para Bellaonline, una maravillosa comunidad
de Internet para mujeres.  Un libro esta en camino para el futuro.  E comenzado una
organización de endometriosis sin fines de lucro.  El Centro de Endo-Kare esta a punto
de abrir, con una oficina en casa desde Little Rock , AR en Verano de 2007.  Nuestra
primera oficina internacional esta por abrir en Canadá en Otoño del 2007.  Endo-Kare
asistirá a través de muchas maneras educacionales incluyendo la difusión de los
diferentes tratamientos disponibles, consejería, búsqueda de Información, acercándonos y
trabajando en estrecha relación con los líderes que estudian la endometriosis.

Es ahora Junio de 2007 y Kari ha estado fuera del Letrozole desde el 4 de Marzo de
2005.  Una vez más, debo decir que estoy impresionada del poder del Inhibidor de
Aromatase.  Kari tuvo una cirugía de emergencia el 1 de Septiembre de 2005, por
adhesiones que hicieron que su ovario izquierdo y útero se unieras a su espalda.  El gran
descubrimiento fue que solo había 2 pequeños focos de endometriosis los cuales fueron
retirados.  El Dr. Miller me dijo que esta era una buena noticia después de haber tenido a
Kari fuera del tratamiento por 6 meses.  Kari tuvo una nueva cirugía el 18 de enero de
2006 por adhesiones severas y se le aplico Seprafilm para prevenir futuras adhesiones.  
El Seprafilm fallo en Enero debido a que tuvo una infección bacteriana inmediatamente
después de la cirugía.  Una cirugía en septiembre de 2006 fue necesaria por adhesiones.  
Kari enfrento una séptima cirugía en enero de 2007, el Seprafilm fue utilizado en forma
de gel exitosamente, Kari permanece libre de endometriosis actualmente.  Ha completando
11vo. Y 12vo grado el año pasado.  Kari va a ir a la Universidad de Arkansas en otoño
de 2007.  Ella es una active y feliz jovencita, la sonrisa ha regresado.   Para este,
nuestro milagro, estaré siempre agradecida a Dios, al Dr. Bulun, al Dr. Miller, y a

Endo, My Daughter and I
As a Mother/Daughter team we are trying to
promote the knowledge and availability of
LETROZOLE as a "positive" treatment for Endo.

This disease has turned our world "upside down"
and has nearly destroyed our functional ability
with life.  The conservative figure of 90 million
women world-wide that suffer with endo makes
this disease more common than AIDS and Cancer.

At the age of 30 I read about this disease in a
woman's magazine.  I did some research at a local
library and did a self diagnosis of sorts.  I had been
misdiagnosed for over 12 years with the Medical
Profession.  At this point in time, I had endo
severely.  I have since, over the years, been through
7 major surgeries.  In the year 1989, the most horrific
surgery that has caused permanent extensive damages
to myself, I received from the hands of Dr. Mercer Lee,
ob/gyn, in Jackson MS.  Dr. Mercer Lee had been given
documentation  in which he signed just the day after
surgery giving him full knowledge of his terrible error
during his surgery.  Dr Lee's decision was to ignore this
fact  allowing me to suffer and remain sick for 9 years
until it was discovered through surgery in 1998.  Given
the  negligent intention of Dr. Lee in 1989,  to allow a
clamped left fallopian tube covered with endo to remain  
in place for 9 years after a full hyst, a mass of
adhesions formed and the tube became full of bacteria.  I
now suffer with pain every day of my life.   In 2001 I
would have  died if emergency surgery was not
performed by a wonderful skilled General Surgeon,
Dr. J. Clay Wellborn,  in Little Rock, AR.  During this
surgery it was necessary to remove a large portion of
my colon, presently, I am very fortunate that I do not
require wearing a bag.  I really had thought that this
disease was behind me and that I could move on with
my life and try to forget the horrible pain in which I
have endured most of my adult years.

This was not to be so, for God has a journey that
He has placed in front of Kari and I.  Kari , at the
age of 16, became the youngest female with the
greatest severity of endo to go on this treatment
February 18, 2004, after completion of
Dr. Serdar E. Bulun's study.  

Kari has had 7 surgeries, the first on November 19,
2003 by an ob/gyn that was of no success.  I then
took her to a Reproductive Endocrinology &
Infertility Specialist, Dr. Michael M. Miller, in Little
Rock who did a lap on December 23, 2003.  This
surgery did give Kari some relief but it was coming
back with a vengeance the end of January.   The
disease from hell was growing to her back, uterus,
ovaries, in her right hip, under her ribs and in her
shoulders.  Kari was not able to walk, sit, or function
with her life, needing to drop out of school to  home
school . She had to give up cross country and the
swim team.  Kari lost contact with her friends.
The depression of her losses began to set in,
the smile was gone.

I have faced many tragedies in my life, but this is
by far has been the darkest time in my life.  This is
my child and I would give my very life that she
would not have to go through this terrible illness.  
My emotions were such that I did not know where
to turn for help and my feeling of helplessness
nearly gave me a breakdown.  I have begun to
understand that with my knowledge and personal
experience with endo that I am the one person who
can do the greatest good for my daughter.  With
this determination I have been able to overcome
and move forward.

On June 19, 2004 Kari told
me "Mom, the endo is all gone!"  She had finally
reached the point where she did not live in severe
pain and most of the side effects of the treatment no
longer effected her.  The bleed through problems would
continue with the duration of this treatment. The
nausea that was bothersome lasted for  only about 1     
month, the headaches, joint and over all soreness
became non-existent.  The fatigue that Kari
experienced stayed with her for the treatment period.  

Kari did remain on  this treatment for 13 months
due to the severity.   On September 14, 2004 Kari
had emergency surgery with Dr. Miller.  We thought it
would be for cysts only to discover it was severe
adhesions, attaching her uterus to her intestines.  Dr.
Miller removed these adhesions and used Interceed
to prevent others from forming.  During this surgery
it was also discovered that there were only 3 tiny
spots of endo!!!! Dr. Miller cut these out making Kari
"endo free".  We have the before and after photos linked
showing the wonderful healing powers of Letrozole.

Most women will do fine with about 6 months on
LETROZOLE.  The treatment is a combination of the
aromatase inhibitor Letrozole and the progestin
norethindrone acetate.  Calcium citrate and vitamin D
are taken to prevent bone density loss.   Letrozole blocks
the production of estrogen in the fatty tissue in organs
where endo is fueled.  Endo may be found in brains,
lungs, intestines, arms, legs, spines, any body organs.

Kari had great success and positive results
from the LETROZOLE treatment and in doing so will
hopefully open the door for millions of young girls
and women. As with any new treatment, there is
no guarantee that it will be right for everyone.  
Letrozole does give hope to those who will choose
to use this treatment for endo.  I am sincere in my
deep desire that everyone with endo be given the
knowledge about all of the available treatments.   
We have had 3 local TV stations air our story, a
National TV Documentary has been filmed with the
final segment  filmed in Chicago  May 2005 when we
met Dr. Bulun for the first time.  Glamour Magazine
has written an article in their March 2005 issue about
endometriosis giving recognition to Dr. Bulun and the
promise of the aromatase inhibitor treatment. I had also  
the pleasure of holding the position of  Gynecology
Editor for Bellaonline, a wonderful community website
for women.  A book is in the works for the near future.

I have started a non-profit endometriosis organization....
The Endo-KARE Centre to open its Home office based In
Little Rock, AR in Spring 2009.  Our first
International office is scheduled to open Summer 2009  
in Canada.  Endo-KARE will assist so very many
through educational awareness to include knowledge
of all the  available "positive" treatments, crises
counseling, research data and information, gaining a
close working relationship with leaders in current
studies for endo.

September 2008 made it 4 years that Kari has been free
of Endo!  Kari finished the Letrozole treatment as of
March 4, 2005.  Once again, I am so amazed at the
power of the aromatase inhibitor.  Kari had emergency
on September 1, 2005 for adhesions that had her left
ovary and uterus adhering to her back.The greatest
discovery was that there were 2 very tiny spots of endo
on her uterus and these were removed allowing Kari to
remain free of endo!  Dr. Miller told me that these spots
were not even worth mentioning…such a wonderful
blessing after 6 months discontinuing the Letrozole
treatment. Kari had additional surgery on January 18,
2006 for severe adhesions and Seprafilm was used as
this barrier has greater success rate of preventing
further adhesions. The Seprafilm failed in January due
to a severe bacteria infection immediately after surgery.
Surgery in September 2006 became necessary for
adhesions. Kari faced a 7th surgery in January 2007
and another in December 2007.  Seprafilm was used in
a gel form and she is experiencing success in her battle
with adhesions.

 Kari will study college courses for photography on
line.  Kari is an active  and happy young lady ..."the
smile is back".  

Five years ago, I could not think beyond saving Kari's
life and giving her the quality of life that we all
deserve.  Kari took a leap of faith...to make a difference
for so very many.  Today, January 2010 we
CELEBRATE many blessings for Kari has two very
special men in her life.  Kari married a wonderful
young man, Eli, in October, 2009. The beautiful garden
wedding was a dream to come true for Kari. Issach
Bryan, their son, will be born in March.  I am the most
ecstatic Grandma!!!  

For this, our miracles, I will always be eternally
grateful to God, Dr. Bulun,  Dr. Miller , and Novartis,
thank you from the bottom of this mothers heart
